Jefferson Stephen Ward (1876-1949) was born in St Joseph, Missouri on April 4, 1876. He studied with Nicholas Brewer, and with Maurice Braun in San Diego. During the 1920s he lived in Glendale, California where he opened an art gallery with his son Thurlow Ward. By the early 1930s the elder Ward was in Jacksonville, Oregon but soon returned to Los Anges where he died on July 22, 1949. Exhibited: Arizona State Fair (Phoenix), 1923 (honorable mention); Witte Museum (San Antonio), 1929 (honorable mention); Oregon State Fair, 1930.
